Terry Jackson, a longtime carver in the northwest coast traditions,
brings his other interests and studios together in this unique artform.
Confirming what he knew intuitively his racial and cultural background,
these studies result in the new porcelain works of art. Born on the west
coast of British Columbia, he thought it only made sense to know the
culture that spawned this vital art. As any artist knows, good art, especially
a cultural one is really a Visual language that speaks past the literal mind.
In it there are verbs, pronouns, etc.
Being introduced to porcelain through his wife Irene, a professional potter,
he saw a picture in his mind of the porcelain, displaying beautifully the
light and shadow of relief carving. Loving woodcarving, he designed and
brought about the creation of wood originals. All the steps of moldmaking
to slipcasting technique, he proceeded to learn and master. Irene
researched to find the very best materials for this vision, while Terry
learned to know its nature and to develop the translucent quality.
Overcoming much difficulty with the medium, he learned the nature of
prayer, that of surrendering to the Creator, there is true success.
The porcelain of Tsolum River Studios is made by Terry Jackon with assistance
by his wife Irene. As the delicate nature of porcelain is sometimes
unpredictable, the edition numbers are kept to a reasonable amount.
Some edition may be smaller as there can be more difficulty in those shapes.
We at Tsolum hope to produce the highest quality we can and set a standard
that may remain for years to come.
Metis art is an artform that emphasizes not the singularity of one culture
but the wide base of peoples that are of it. Louis Riel's great vision of a
nation, composed of mixed native and European people has not died, but
is emerging at this time at the beginning of the new millenium!
